A look at this year’s MLB World Series Contenders

As October baseball nears the World Series, The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays are both chasing the same dream, but their journeys couldn’t be more different. One is a defending champion, the other trying to shake off a 32 year postseason drought.

Let’s break down the two teams still standing, how they got here, and when each team last made a big October run.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are the team to beat and seemed to be in control of the National League the whole season. Honestly, it’s no surprise. They’ve been in the playoffs every year since 2013. A twelve year post season streak is a heck of a feat in and of itself, but last year, they even came out on top as World Series champs against a hungry New York Yankees team winning the series four games to one.

This year they’ve got arms like Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani (who both pitches and hits) that give them a strong chance to walk away with back-to-back championships.  Their Playoff experience as well as organizational depth lends itself greatly in the high pressure moments, but to walk away with the title this year they must limit damage in games where the starter leaves early. One bad inning in the postseason can swing momentum.

Toronto Blue Jays

The last time the Toronto Blue Jays were in the World Series, it was 1993.  It was their second time in the World Series in the same amount of years, winning the pennant the year before after defeating the Braves.  The 1993 series was especially famous for Joe Carter’s walk-off home run in Game 6.  That home run remains one of the most iconic moments in baseball history as it was the last time a World Series ended on a home run.

What the Blue Jays have going for them in this year’s World Series run is a deep offensive lineup with key players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer and others providing power and run-production.  We’ve witnessed improved defense and overall cohesion from the team as they found their footing throughout the playoffs, especially in their sweep of the Yankees.

However what they need to improve to win it all, is stability in their bullpen.  High walk rates could give this team the October scaries they’d rather save for Halloween, and the stat of highest home-run totals in the league allowed by their starters is a stat they’ll need to put in the rearview mirror to earn the title of Champion.
